Milwaukee Road Trip :: Part 1

Two weekends ago, I went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for peace of mind away from life and work. I know you're probably thinking, "WHY would she go to MILWAUKEE?" Yeah, Milwaukee is colder than Chicago in the winter. I don't care for weather as long as I have a car to be warm in. So that's what I did. I grabbed Ty, packed for nearly a month (it's a habit of mine- hence why I'm a bag [making] lady), and left.

I went to visit one of my best friends, Anna, who was just relocated to the city because of her job. Anna and I have known each other since high school, where we would party into the wee hours of the night at a mutual friend's basement, but it was only a few years ago that we became really close. She's one of the funnest girls I know and she has the most addicting personality. We were inseparable for a while and lived with each other last year. Even though we did lose touch for a few months, I know I could count on her to cheer me up. Her confidence and carefree personality, and all the drinks and food we had in between, was exactly what I needed that weekend.

I'll be splitting up the pictures and my stories in a few posts for your constant enjoyment!

::ANNA'S HOME::

Anna lives in this beautiful 4 story home (with a basement and an attic!) in the neighborhood of Concordia. The neighborhood is run down and I was told multiple times it's real dangerous... despite that, her rent is cheap, the house is beautiful, the homes around are beautiful, and the city is a short drive away. I'm a sucker for homes with history, wood floors, secret doors, and creepy attics... and since I've lived in places by myself that are the "ghetto", it didn't bother me one bit at all.

Her house was built in 1880 by this artist's father. Her father helped with the build of the Pabst Blue Mansion, so I'm sure you could only imagine all the sweet details he put into the home. She lived there her whole life.

Ty was able to enjoy a full 4 days of puppy play time. He was absolutely play-dead for the two days we had returned home. It was such a treat to have a sleepy year and a half puppy for that long!

That fancy door table was in a little room in the basement. I loved it! Also, check out the detailed ceiling in the last photo. Wild, right? Her house is full of beautiful details.

Hey everyone!
In December, my friend [and ALMOST HITCHED lovely logo designer] Jen, included Bird Trouble in a zine that she created for one of her school projects. The zine is called Pen & Needle and is dedicated to spreading the HANDMADE art culture.

I met Jen at the INDIEana Handicraft craft show in Indianapolis, Indiana last August. She came up to my booth and we instantly started chatting about Bird Trouble and she was so enthusiastic about what I do and how I do things. We exchanged business cards, kept in touch, and we've friends ever since. I'm so honored that she featured me in her project to help push and motivate other artists. I also had the pleasure to do a sweet Q&A about myself and what I think handmade is about.

New COLLECTION NO. 3 - PRE.RELEASED BAGS

I've decided to pre-release two blanket bags from the LAST South Western [aka Navajo bags] Bag Collection! One is already on reserve, so there is only one from this collection. The bag that is available is the first bag in the photos and is available here. There is also another bag left from the second collection that can be purchased here.

There will be a total of 5 bags in the last collection. Two are being put into the shop pre-maturely merely because I'm anxious to show them, and I'm doing this with my outside full-time work schedule. Flashback :: Camping

The laughter of friends, the sound of music, camp fires, beers, climbing trees, eggs and sausage in the morning, sharing a one person tent with your girlfriend and your 80lb dog, considering a splash of water on your face as bathing. Last year during the summer, I went camping with a few of my friends that I've known since high school. We went to meet Man Diller at Le Aqua Na State Park. He's in the red shorts below. The state park was on his list as one of his pit stops on a long bike excursion he was on.

I recently came across the roll of film I took there. It takes me months to get a roll of film developed. This might be me explaining my excuse of either being lazy, or actually thinking this... but instead of doing it in a rush, I enjoy waiting months (sometimes a year- but that's unintentional) to see how they came out. I used my dad's Canon, but I had no idea how to deal the settings. My friend Laurie, who has been carrying a camera around since I met her, gave me a good sweet and short explanation..and here I go. The first one of Laurie and Lexi was stuck to another, so I had to rip it apart, but I like it like that.

Of course camping does not mean leave the phone at home.. it's just, let your phone die.

In other news, I've been sort of on a "break" with sewing. I'm in the winter rut and have been moping around because of it. I handled my rut by leaving and going to visit Anna in Milwaukee, which was the perfect amount of a mini-vacation short way from home, and relieving to be with one of my best friends. I've been back all week, and finished two Navajo style blanket bags for the last collection, but I've been catching up with friends mostly. Sometimes you just need to shut the door, close the computer, step away for your sanity. Or you can do what I do...
Shut the door, leave behind the computer because the screens cracked anyway, grab Ty and get the heck out of Chicago, and do a lot of thrifting on your way out!

Shop Update :: Oversized, Yellow Leather, & Hand-painted Fashion

I've been anxious to get these into the shop. These have to be some of my favorite. Especially the large zipper pouches! Myself and the rest of Chicago are diging the cheerful Chicago freak-warm winter weather we've been having. Maybe it helped inspire these bright new bags. This shop update includes the following small/vague blurb that describes the previous lives that these bags had.... before they were bags.

one was a leather jacket that I almost kept.

these were on the original yardage bolt in a trunk of a van at a rummage sale.
he was a re-upholsterer who told me it was designer vintage.

if anyone knows any information, I'd like to validate this.

one was a skirt that just simply pleasantly surprised me.

this actually was just these: canvas and leather jacket. the brown strap is from a leather jacket, but I painted the canvas, and was also pleasantly surprised.

Also updated: I am now ONLY SHIPPING ON MONDAYS. This has been an on-going issue for me, but I work another job on top of sewing and my hours always change. Mondays are my constant day off and will from now on ONLY ship on Mondays, otherwise noted.

Sunday in Pink

Today, I woke up with a slight feeling that I might be getting sick but proceeded with the plans that Nein and I had made. We went to Huck Finn's in Bridgeport to eat a donut and a breakfast meal. Nein let me borrow her camera (hence my lack of posts - my digital camera broke and I borrow friend's cameras until I can save up for a nice one), so I was able to take pictures of some bags that have been waiting for a proper and successful photo shoot. Not to mention, it was beautiful outside today (basically California winter weather in Chicago IN JANUARY) and I didn't realize that the brick work on my back deck is kind of nice to look at.

So, now I plan on trying to decide if I should eat my leftover curry noodles, or if I should make a good home cooked meal. I'll then fill my water with more echinacea because I really, really do not want to get sick.
Tomorrow I'm going to make a trip to the fabric warehouse again! I'm excited to do a little supply shopping.

Also, if you're curious about the last blanket bag collection, I've been trying to finish it but I've been lacking some essential materials. I'm 99% sure that I'm going to be going to Milwaukee this weekend to visit a friend, so realistically I probably wont finish it for 2 weeks. The color combination on these ones are amazing though, so the wait will be worth it.

Style Envy :: Closet Visit

Around Chicago :: Architectural Artifacts

Nein and I went to Architectural Artifacts a few weeks ago and well... I have to say, it is one of new favorite things to do in Chicago. There's so many crazy things, big things, dead things, pointy things, expensive things, weird things, normal but cool things, and fun boxes to go through. I purchased some teeth, a vintage RV blueprint, and an old photo of a retro work truck. We scampered like school children and squeeled and gasped for the entire time we were in that building. The. Entire. Time.

OH YEAH AND HEY, IT'S JANUARY 1ST.

Inspiration to distract the tiring holidays

Hopefully everyone had a good holiday weekend! Here's a little update with mine:

Christmas Eve was spent with a fairly new friend of mine. We listened to music, he watched me mix deviled eggs mixture on his floor, helped me with 3 trays of what I like to call 'cherry granola cups with a chocolate bottom'. There were only 2 trays by the end of the night. During my creative cooking time [creative because I have no clue what I'm doing in the kitchen- I just throw things together], Stephen customized a tattoo sketch for me. We stayed up late to finish tattooing my wrist with my brand new lovely tattoo. I gave him a pouch to give to his sister as an X-mas gift and a birthday gift, essentially in-trade. My Christmas day was very chill. I spent the day with a friend's family, was fed generously, and was treated to a bunch of little gifts too. I brought the deviled eggs and the remaining 2 trays of the 'cherry granola cups with a chocolate bottom'. Christina and I had a smartphonephotofilters photoshoot on the couch with our wine while we watched Elf... haha. Oh the things that best girl friends do under the influence of a few glasses...

DIY dream bag pt.3 :: Shop vacation

So in between making bags for Bird Trouble, I'm also currently revamping an old vest into my dream bag. Basically, I need a bag that is big enough to fit enough stuff, but not too large. I like short straps, but I also like messenger straps... so it's still in process, but slowly and surely. Currently there's no lining, so I might even open it a little wider and add more leather. So far, I'm digging it! A LOT! Like, so so much, seriously.

Studio Tour :: Part 2

Onto Part DOS!

Amanda mentioned in my commented in part 1 that she was a fan of my concrete flooring. Amanda, I LOVE it! Max, my roommate, told me before I checked out the place, "The floor is concrete but we can get a rug for you." The second I saw it, with all it's paint splatters, I was in love! I've always wanted to live in an open warehouse with concrete floors, so that I was able to make a mess like this. When I lived near Philadelphia, I would dream of these sewing factories that were converted into live-in open warehouse space lofts near Northern Liberties. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I think Something's Hiding in Here live in the same building, or similar. They have wooden floors, but their layout look like the ones that I was interested in.

Studio Tour :: Part 1

So, as promised, I am returning with a slew of pictures of how my studio is currently standing. I'm kind of a freak when it comes to redecorating though. I always need to rearrange, or clear out, or paint. It's fun!

Okay, so, a few things: Ignore the tilted cork wall panel. I didn't catch that until after I uploaded photos, haha. Also, I found that cork board at a thrift store! I love it. I hope I can find more on ebay or something. My favorite item is my vintage magician's box! All the way to the right on the first photo. It's lovely.

Isn't Ty adorable?! Also, what do you guys think of the floor?! I love it. My roommate hates it, he said he'd put a rug. I dont know, maybe I can get a small rug, but it feel nice.

Self portrait :: Craft room renovations

This might be the.... fourth time I redecorated and rearranged my work room since I moved here. It's only been 2 months?
Maybe I'm weird but I think its actually fun and super relaxing, especially when I'm blasting the Rolling Stones and the children (dog&cat) are napping on the couch.
Also, can you please notice the length of my hair? Holy shit. More pictures are due, I just need to edit them.

I'll have a table at Eskell's Holiday Bazaar this Saturday. It's from 11am to 7pm and it's right dab in Wicker Park, only a few stores down from Urban Outfitters. I'm excited for it's location! Wicker Park is a super hipster shopping area and neighborhood in Chicago. It's fun. It's always REALLY busy, and it seems to just keep getting busier. So I'm crossing my fingers for good traffic day! I know it will be a blast. I'm really sort of anxious for it. Pre-craft show jitters. Only because I'm like AH, IS EVERYTHING TAGGED, DONE, IS THE DOG HAIR OFF, DO I HAVE ENOUGH, I NEED BAGS. yep.

Around chicago :: The Dark Horse

A few nights ago, I went to The Dark Horse with a few of Max's friends that I've known since high school. It's sort of funny, because if you visit the site and if you knew me, you'd be like "Why the heck were you there?". The night we went, it wasn't insane with these Chicago sports fans (trust me, they're nuts! no offense, haha), and it had more of a dive bar feel. Which is much more my type of cookie. I thought the Christmas lights were really distracting and awesome, and it actually inspired me to put up our mini lights around the door frames in our apartment the next day.

After that, we went to The Pick Me Up Cafe. I had a breakfast dinner, of course. This place has been one of my favorites since high school.

Thanksgiving drive to Kankakee, IL. I couldn't stop taking pictures of the sky and messing with the settings of my camera. I love the light exposure, from dark to light. The mood of them are sort of a great to reflect the events of that day, and that weekend.

DIY :: Farewell studded vest ::: Hello B.A. bad

OK. Remember THIS post? And how I said I wanted to do that?

My roommate was kind enough to offer to record me making the first cut into a vest I used to wear for two years straight. I don't know why but I have a huge attachment to this vest. Probably because it's a good reminder that maddog and beer do not mix, and never speed in the country where there's no street lights. Heart break, teenage angst, nights away from home.
I was walking to the bathroom today and I don't know, it just struck me. So! Now I'm going to make a bag personally for myself. I was kind of freaking out, and I kind of still am, but I'm pretty confident that this is going to be the most bad ass bag ever, and it's all mine!

After I was so awkwardly, but in the best way, recorded by my roommate... I did more cutting and took some photos (and a video I need to figure out how to edit) with a normal camera (not an iPhone). I'll update ya'll later.

Welcome December :: new craft room renovations!

Finally, December is here! Good riddance November. I'm probably speaking too soon, because as soon as the bad snow hits, I'm going to beg for November... or at least March. I did some slight rearranging in my craft room, again. When I moved in, the previous dude who lived here left this platform and he painted it this weird muted blue-gray. It matched the cement too much. I needed more of a contrast and a different feel.

Originally, I had it as it was probably made to be as, a platform, and my move-able rack (love it because I don't have a closet!!) was on top of it. I moved the rack to the side where my bed is, and I flipped the platform to lean against the wall backward. I took some nails, and nailed them into it, and proceeded to hang some of my bags. It actually got me all giddy, because I sort of felt like I was selling up a store front. I still need to fill it, paint it, and play around with it, but I do like it's new home.

DIY :: Business cards from vintage coasters.

Hey everyone! I'm super excited to show you these business cards and hang tags I made. Trying to sell yourself as an artist and a small business, you have to have business cards! I change mine up every time I run out. I'm pretty sure that they'll never be the same, and even though branding is important, I think it's also important to grab someones eye and get them talkin'. It's neat because everyone gets to see little glimpe of what you can make if you make your own business cards. I'm not just sewing these bags, I'm also slaying over every other part: like making business cards, and trying to build myself.

I found these vintage beer coasters in this old candy box in the dirty, quite disgusting, estate sale a few months ago. I've had them laying around until something inspired me to make them into business cards. Each one is different, and since I love to doodle and I love script, I decided to include both in almost each one. I think it really says something about what I want myself & Bird Trouble to be, vintage inspired, sustainable, and ever-growing.

I had a pretty fun tapestry bag mini photo shoot this morning during Ty’s walk. It was really windy this morning, and I’m sure you can paint a funny mental picture of me chasing my hat around. Both bags are OOAK and created from a vintage bohemian-style tapestry that I thrifted. One of my recent favorite finds!

Farewell my favorite :: New looks

I'm pretty stoked to be sending Sally Ann this blanket bag today. I have to admit, it's my favorite one as of yet. I think it's because I really like going nuts with the studs... and this one has been affected by this habit of mine the most. Other than that, the colors are most vibrant and I really, really, really like the blending. Sally actually requested a sturdy base bottom through instagram, and I experimented a bit and decided to add a cardboard base.
Now it stands!

It's so fancy. So fancy.

So yes, there is my excitement on sending this to Sally. I'm also going to sneak in a few surprises. Almost a month ago, she sent me two medium sized priority mail boxes FULL of vintage zippers, wooden handles ( I have been having the MOST fun with these ), lovely fabric ( remember these pouches? Thanks to Sally ), and a bunch of bag hardware. Metal hardware. A lot of it is BRASS. It was so rad because it was right when I moved into this new apartment, when a lot of my stuff was still in the suburbs, so she pretty much saved the feature premier of the second bag collection.
Oh yeah, Sally's a sweetheart for sure. You should check out her crafty blog and all the lovely things she makes.

I worked on my online shop for a little today too. I've been changing so many things around me, including the furniture and walls of my apartment. I am definitely in one of those weeks where I need a refreshin'. Re-freakin'-freshin'.

I really like the new banner. It was taken at this bar in Lakeview, and instead of being busy drinking, I was being busy admiring the Christmas lights. Typical Friday night.

The thought of a side project

Happy Sunday. I was planning on going celebrate a friend's birthday last night, but ended up taking a 10:30pm nap, and not waking up until 3am. Where then I proceeded to catch up on the newest season of Dexter (H. S.) until 5am. Then sleeping until noon today. I guess my body was really begging for some sleep?

My side project for this week, even though

it's a small one, is to replicate an idea like this:

But using the vest that I studded, stenciled, and sewed in high school.

This guy was on my back for almost 2 years straight. There's some sentimental value to it

but really not much. It sits under all my clothes, but I'll never wear it again. Unless I wear it for a special event, for humor, but I just don't want to throw it out. I might not use only plants.... I was thinking of things, like christmas lights... and maybe small little dinosaurs. We'll see how I'm feeling.

Has anyone else changed the something that they've had for years, into something different?

textile at the thrift store. It was separated in two plastic bags, so basically hidden, but my hawk like

thrifting reflexes caught them and took them home.

I laid it in my bed with it for a day before I proceeded to cut it up. It's just the process I go through with everything I get.. I want to be able to own it for a little bit.

I love the process of finding something I love, and waiting for an idea to come while I watch That 70s Show (how many times have I mentioned I am obsessed with that show? it's sickening),
walk to the drafting table, and just go for it. PROOF :

Crochet and Pastels :: New Pouches

Today consisted of typical day things: 8:00am alarm, wash laundry, 30mph in a 25mph speeding ticket, Arizona Iced Tea, The Who, climbing 4 flights of stairs multiple times, and now drying laundry at my new favorite laundry mat with free WIFI. A nice little treat away from re-arranging my studio AGAIN.

Oh yeah, I did that too.

Black Monday

Black Monday.

Chicago weather is extremely tolerable today, unlike the last few windy days. I'd like to thank NMM for lending me her black coat, because now I need one of my own. I've been extremely productive yesterday and this morning, so I'm taking a break and going to the thrift stores in my neighborhood. I've added four new pouches in the shop today. I'm pretty sure I was having crazy dreams about them, but this morning's 8:30am mini photo shoot was almost too perfect. Especially because Ty ran at full force and fell on his face from one cement level to the next.

The Second Collection :: Navajo Bags

COLLECTION NO. 2 WOOL BLANKET BAGS

I finished the second collection of the vintage wool Navajo blankets. This was made given the materials by the 2nd out of 3 blankets that I found at a garage sale. The original owner was a traveler. She collected these blankets from her travels, thrift stores, and garage sales she went to over years. There were other styles, that I regret not buying today. I even drove to her house to see if she had any left.... and none.

There should be 5 out of each blanket, but you'll notice only 4 here. The last one may be kept by myself, because I should be able to give myself something fancy once in a while, or I'll end up making it and putting it in the shop late.

Today, I found a wool skirt that has weaved stripes. You might see that turn into something pretty soon. I'm pretty excited for any future ideas that I sketch out. I found corkwall insulation, from what looks like the 60's, at the Brown Elephant Thrift Store in Andersonville. It was $5 and I got 4 panels that I stuck onto my wall with a good adhesive, and started already pinning junk to it... such as lace, studs, squirrel tails, clay puppy faces, pictures of cat owners... and you know, the usual.

I've been so blown away by the responses and the quick purchases made from the first navajo blanket collection. I also realized that I never made a blog post when they were actually available to purchase... but that's how fast they went! Thank you to everyone and my kind customers for making my little bag dream come true.

There is one more bag left from the first collection. It was originally a custom design and held on reserve, but

now that the reserve fell through, it's available for anyone. The original bags are not said to be messenger style, unless you are shorter and can wear it with comfort. The last bag standing is one that was custom made specifically for a messenger style! The straps are not only longer, but wider so it sits comfortable!

Mini Road Trip :: Starved Rock

We went on another mini road trip. To my favorite mini road trippin' place there is.
STARVED ROCK, UTICA, IL

Since the last time I went ended up being Columbus Day and was jam packed with ruthless families and children and happy golden retrievers. That was horrible! But that is when we went to Ladd, IL
and ended up having drinks at a dive bar. THAT was great.

A few weekends ago, we took Ty on a Monday morning, and there was close to no one there. Starved Rock is amazing at this time of year. Fall colors are my favorite shade of colors. The foggy minded feeling I get gives me nostalgia from high school. We let Ty off his leash a lot. It's pretty hilarious seeing a 1 year and 5 month old, 80 pound, pit bull mix run up and down the hills like it was his first breathe of fresh air. He looked like the happiest dog in the world. The weather was perfect. The exploring was perfect. The hike was perfect. We made sandwiches and ate them looking onto the dam. It was a perfect day!

We drove a little far out and explored an abandoned home. I tried to go in the cellar but I was greeted by a reaaaaal pretty spider, so I ran for the cornfields. We explored the house a little bit and I "ooo!!"ed over the kitchen cabinets. I "oooooo!!!"ed over the deteriorating wallpaper.

I also think I "oooo!" over a lot. I'm very easily entertained and pleased. But I've always been told it's a good quality of mine.

This is my favorite holiday and I unfortunately feel a bit unprepared. I did find a photo inspiration and I have the articles in my mind, now lets see how I can pull it off. I'm driving to my parents house tonight with a friend so we can find some catholic jewelry. Tomorrow, a co-worker of mine is having a HAUNTED HALLOWEEN PARTY. I'm so excited for drinks and scares! Ha!

Found her in Lookbooks Halloween Contest. She's Wednesday Addams but I'm going to put a twist on it. I'll report back to how bad I failed at it, or kick assed at it. ha.

Giving up Grudges.

I've been going through a million up and downs lately, and I'm sure you have been too.

To be honest, I'm rather sick of letting myself feel like crap, and I'm sure you are too.

How many of you read HelloGiggles? I stumbled across this post: The Path to Forgiveness: 8 Steps to Ditch Your Grudge, and I went on my rainy walk with Ty this morning with a fresher look. I know I hold grudges and I hold them hard. I've been holding a really big grudge for the past month.
I also know I'm very much a loner when it comes to dealing with my feelings. I'd much rather get in my car and drive somewhere by myself, for multiple days in a row, then deal with it in any other way. But I've realized the more I get older, the more the grudges are bringing me down, so this morning after going through so many thoughts in my heads, I stopped and thought:

Alexz, you're fricken' O.K. You're 24 years old. Shit happens. It'll happen tomorrow, in a few months of now, years from now, and for the rest of your life.

This past month has been one of the toughest in my life. This past weekend, and these past few days, have been a pretty nutty emotional roller coaster, but the question flew into me this morning: What on earth am I doing? I have so much I'm so happy about, so much I'm looking forward to, some of the best friends who care about me, awesome co-workers at the salon who I miss on my days off, a hyper-active insane but healthy pup, and a route to a pretty dang good daily routine. On Monday, I moved into my new apartment, with two real cool dudes, in the most beautiful Chicago neighborhood than I've ever lived in before. It's only been a few days and I already feel spoiled by the neighborhood and the benefits of my room.

So there it is, my claim to do the following: express, communicate, forgive, move on, laugh, live, make mistakes, love again, keep sewing, meet a friend, meet a new friend, see a friend I haven't seen in a long time, get a drink, explore the city, make small talk with strangers, smile more, go get breakfast by myself at this cute little diner down the street, put a feminine touch to this apartment, save for travel, travel by myself, collect what makes me happy, do what makes me happy, stay positive, and have no regrets.

Found this at the thrift store today. I'm thinking about another standing tote? I really want to include the tassles some how.
Process of the second blanket collection. I did the leather differently on these. Plus, this leather is a lot easier to manage. I'm digging the color combination of these! Maybe enough to keep one for myself!
Last, the four blanket pouches while they were just cut. I love that fringe!

NEW Blanket Pouches!

NEW! AH! AH!

I decided to make some zipper pouches from the last of the scrap on the second blanket.
I think they turned out pretty darn cute! There's only 4 right now. Two small, two big, yadda yadda. I've been sewing, munching on food, and watching That 70's Show since 10:30am. It's 8:30pm! *going crazy*

I'm still working on the second collection of blanket bags (which I mind you, are looking awesome). They're actually come along really fast. I went a little faster with the studding and the leather sewing, which saved a lot of time and also the amounts of mochas and coffees I've had in the past few days. I've also had way too many ham and cheese sub sandwiches.

I should be moving into my new apartment this Monday! I'm super excited.
This weekend is just going to be cleaning and slight packing.

Anyone have any big plans for this weekend?

Huge THANKS! :: & a DIY

The first collection of Navajo bags were a huge success.

So, a million kitten kisses

in thanks to everyone for all the compliments, the encouragement, and support! There's only one more for sale. Here's a photo of my mother's package that is going to be shipped out to Mexico for her. Lucky parents, they're hiding out from the rain and fierce winds that so rudely flipped my vintage umbrella tonight. Good thing I'm comfortable laughing at myself, and I laugh easily.

Despite this weather, I try to remain cheerful and that means I'm going to start busting out obnoxious color clothing and my very exciting polyester dresses. Yay! I spruced up a cute lace dress with a dip at the hem from the front to the back, giving a re-birth to this once before table cloth! I bought it at the flea market this past time I went, for only $3.00. I can make one more, or I can save the rest of the material for bags.
What do you guys think?

If you're my IG friend, you've already seen the finished product. I just need to take a photo with a proper camera and a proper self-timed angle. haha. I feel lame posting iPhone photos all the time!

A Thifted Handmade Dress :: Favorites

Let me introduce you to

one of my FAVORITE dresses OF ALL TIME.

I found this dress some time last year. You might recognize it from being in my main blog photo for a while.

I thrifted it at a dinky little thrift store off Chicago Ave. for only $6.00. It's made from a real thick heavy canvas (I almost feel potato shacky in it!) but the details of the cut outs are amazing. I had to take in the darts a little, and it wouldn't hurt to take it in a little more, but I'm comfortable in it right now. Not too baggy, not too tight! I think it's handmade because there are no tags on it, and the seams on it seem to look a little off. But I love that it has a little but of issues, it makes it even more special to me.

The little rose floral belt was found at the Pilsen Vintage bazaar last winter.

19 Days of Polaroids - Day 2.

Day 2.

Circa first-year-being-in-college and in Textiles class. Our project was to make a wearable outfit with creative material that isn't fabric. I used a screen for a screen door. I purchased a few bolts of it so I could make a million ruffled shades sewn to copper wiring, and then attach it to the dress so it look like it's coming out like plants. Then I spray painted them and I strung beads through it. Why? Why did I do that? haha

Take a peak at my work space!

I've been in the process of moving around a lot, but here are some
snap shots of my current WORK SPACE.

I decorate with items I've collected by hunting down or stumbling across, or they have been given to me over the years. I recently put my sewing machine on top of the drafting table I used to use when I was in elementary school (literally I has I <3 Nick drawn on it with glitter glue pens), and I don't know why I didn't think about it earlier. My chair and my window frame were found in alley ways. My bed and my clothes are in this room right now as well. My TV sits on a chair with a furry blanket underneath it.
It's a comfortable room in a large house. I wanted everything to be together, I think I make it work.

1. LF lookbook. I just recently came across LF and I love, love, love their Daydream Nation book.

2. Fresh retro styling with a twist of 1970's textures.

3. This website is a really great photo reference and inspiration. I love the look and the kiss lock clutch she girl is giving the camera.

4. How could I not love a pair of 70's platforms?

5. She has an eye for texture! I love everything about her hat, and the sequins. If anyone knows more about this picture, I'd love to learn! Also, if anyone has a hat like that.... eh, eh?

Navajo Bags :: Finishing Up

The other day, I told you guys about the new slew of Navajo Bags that I'm making. Today, I wanted to give you a glimpse of the pile that I'm almost done with. I've paired together the pieces and was SO excited when I took a step back. I've been working on these since Monday. Literally non-stop, besides for working at the salon, taking Ty out, maybe eating, doing some other custom sewing, and of course sleeping. I've been waking up at 8am every day so I can sew for a few hours before work, and then I come home to sew more.

These should be done and in the shop on Friday or Saturday. Of course, they'll follow up with better pictures since my best friend, Christina, is so kindly letting me use her camera. :)

Hey readers! While I'm busy sewing, I'm filling up the blog posts with some entertaining things. I know everyone loves an outfit post. I, unfortunately, only have my iPhone and the random disposable cameras I've purchased in the past few days since my snap&shoot mysteriously broke. Either way, enjoy!

I found this great blue and white stripped button up shirt at a garage sale. I'm pretty sure it's a maternity shirt because the arm holes are so much smaller (I have pretty thin arms), and the stomach darts out. I love it though. The bag is my own Bird Trouble painted clutch... which is a small collection I've been slowly working at. I should get at that *dink*.

A nice breezy shirt I made from two, basically see-through, fabrics. One is the turqoise and one is a white... I wear a bandau underneath it. I love the shade of it. The belt was given to me by a long-time friend and I have it attached to my favorite-of-all-time leather belt.

My Betsy Johnson socks that I've had for 2 years and have only worn, maybe, three times? haha. The shoes are these leather boots I bought at Carlos and Sarah's Surplus of Options. They're great boots but I haven't had time to wear out the leather yet, so they were kind of hurtin'.

It's been shockingly great weather in Chicago so I've been trying to pair fall-type of clothes with breathable pieces too. Literally, it was 80 degrees the other day, but there was a great breeze... and today it might be in the 70's, not as sunny but I had the windows down the whole way to work.
I remember the past few Halloweens being super cold. Maybe it'll be super nice this year?!

Coming Soon - Navajo Bags

This is how I'm enjoying my Monday off work: sewing all day, listening to a few good tunes that I've recently been told about, and drinking lots of coffee. I guess I have to leave the house for a little bit so I'm going to the fabric store, stopping at a friends house (who so nicely made my vintage cruiser into a single speed good working bicycle! yay!), and taking Ty to my nice secret spot.

I've already received a great amount of excitement and compliments for these navajo bags. I'm so, so, so excited to know how many people loved the one I put on Instagram. I wanted to thank everyone for the support and the push to get a bunch of these made. **Internet hug**. I've already promised a few IG friends that I'll save them one. Since these are made from vintage weaved blankets, I've been able to cut out only 5 bags for the first blanket, and I have 3 blankets (each a different variation of colors). One bag, each blanket, will have the center blast design that was weaved into it. Those will be extra special, haha.

The original bag has dark leather but those were the remaining large pieces from the leather jacket I snatched it from. The other bags will randomly have 3 different colored leather: a buttery chestnut, golden brown, and a yellow.

19 Days Of Polaroids / Day 1.

Hey ya'll! I've pretty much settled in the place, but this is only the first part of my moving situation. I found an apartment for November 1st, so another move will come before I get comfortable, and then you'll start hearing more of me! I've just been so busy with commuting to work, and trying to get some work done but also taking care of my hyper active dog. It's also killing me that I can't get so comfortable sewing here- so I'm going to FORCE myself to make some new items I've been non-stop thinking about.

I think you'll be so excited when you see them, too!

So... here's the jist. I've also been putting the blog through some re-designing, re-organizing, re-everything-slowly-but-surely. So don't look at it until I tell you, haha. ANYWAY. I wanted to make a blog event to hold over a majority of my blog posts while I put the sewing machine peddle to the metal. Okay, I admit that was corny. I'll still make some small other posts here and there. It just might be all over the place. But so, I have some Navajo blankets I've been cutting up and I was really motivated today after seeing this clients bag, so this will help me sew, sew, and sew that idea out of my head.

Lately :: Fall Brings Life Changes

This fall is bringing a ton of changes in my life. As much as I hate moving, relocating, and essentially 'starting over' again, I really do love the confidence boosts I get out of it. Nothing is best than knowing you've figured out how you're going to live, how you're going to change, how you're going to make yourself better, how you are awesome and how you deserve the truth, and finding a brand new spankin' hat! Dang, I got lucky.

I'm glad I've gone through what I have, because I think it makes me a stronger, more driven person, and only I know what's best for myself. Currently, I'm in temporary living. It's sort of like a vacation. I went to a pond yesterday and ran around through some bushes with the pup, then I blasted some AC/DC, and went to about 6-8 garage sales. I wouldn't want anything more!

Coming with relocating and starting over, next month, I'll be relocating to a neighborhood called Buena Park with two dudes, one of them being one of my best dude friends from high school. He does real cool illustration, sells some shirts at a shop, and is a future tattoo artist. I'm really excited to be in a new neighborhood in a totally different area! I've never been this close to Lake Michigan. I've never lived somewhere where I can walk to a beach, even if it will be cold and it is against a lake.
I can't wait to show you guys what it looks like after it's set up!

NEW Mini Collection : Vintage Waxed Oilcloth & Drawstring Bags!

Hello everyone! I'm very excited for today. I'm updating the shop (as I'm making this blog post) and introducing an early fall mini collection.

NEW Early Fall Mini Collection featuring:

VINTAGE WAXED OILCLOTH: six bags (two not pictured) of vintage waxed oilcloth ( was a tablecloth!) bags. There are two of each that are similar to each other, but not exactly the same- so they are one of a kind! The large and medium bags can be worn FOUR different ways.

DRAWSTRING BAGS: two bags (as of right now) of casual bags with a drawstring closure that feature a retro peach vintage polyester, a vintage lace ( was a blanket!), and repurposed leather.

These are super, super limited and they should all be in the shop within the next 30 minutes!

Recollecting.

A check-in with your mood and your life gives you a chance to

reaffirm your essence in an age when it’s easy to get lost.

I read that this morning, an hour after I walked into work, from a blog post at HelloGiggles. I know I don't really spend a lot of time on the internet, unless I'm at work, but I want to try to do something different this weekend to try to focus more on my mood. Normally, Sundays are my days for blasting music in my living room and doing a mad cleaning job then some crafting. I want take a day out of the craft room.

Tomorrow I want to go thrifting by myself to thrift stores I don't normally go to, take Ty to the dog beach, sit outside (or in the coffee shop if it's too crappy out- of course no devices) with a notebook and a pen just to write, sketch out photo ideas for my new products for Bird Trouble, and maybe.... maybe write down some finance planning for the next few months.

What are your plans for this weekend? Are you going out or recollecting yourself?

Recent Projects in iPhone Form

There's so many things I want to show you guys but I can't because of a broken digital camera!

Here are some snap shots, look at them as a little sneak peak, of
what I've been creating lately.

Large tote bag that can be worn 4 different ways with 4 different buttons to make it size adjustable. Made out of a vintage oilcloth table cover, cotton canvas, leather, and hardware. A red canvas lining is inside. This is what is looks like folded at the smallest size. You can even slip a scarf in the bag while it's folded this way.

A smaller shoulder bag that can be worn 4 different ways with 4 different buttons to make it size adjustable. Comes with two straps: the repurposed belt strap and a matching oilcloth strap. Made out of a vintage oilcloth table cover, cotton canvas, leather, and hardware. A red canvas lining is inside. The flap opens with a zipper for more storage and the zipper pull is braided hemp with a golden leather tab.

Originally a heavy upholstery wool that I found at a garage sale 2 years back. It's taken me that long to work up the nerve to cut into the fabric. It's probably one of my favorite finds. This is a two-way-open zipper envelope clutch. It's a dark chocolate and has white screen printer retro flowers. You can even fold it in half, like a bun, to make it smaller and to hold it with one hand. Perfect for on the go or packing.

As you can see, I've been trying to keep myself really busy until I move at the end of this month. The apartment is so quiet, and I've seen all my movies 100 times. Sewing has been my only vice of entertainment without going crazy. Good thing I'm having fun doing it!

The Lagoon

We went for a walk to Humboldt Park that morning, which is only a 5 minute walk away but the park itself is huge. We walked around, threw sticks, enjoyed the sun in our eyes, and laid in the grass for a while. That was a nice day. I'm going to miss Humboldt Park for the next 6 months.

Looking at these pictures are really nostalgic because they were only a short week ago, but so much has changed. The weather, my living situation (again), and my future. This could have been the very last day of beautiful summer weather, but it was definitely the very last day my camera was fully working.

The lagoon is my favorite place there. It's Ty's too.

We both have the same stupid smiles on our face.

I made the dress I'm wearing. I found the fabric from this fabric hoarders estate sale before last winter. The fabric is really light and the dress itself just slips on and frog clasps at the shoulder blades. It's my perfect lazy walk down the street dress. I also have been recently rocking the high bun. Thanks to a co-worker-bun-rocker of mine, I learned how to get my bun perfect.

Recently from the Estate Sale

I found some real great dresses.

While Jen and Alec were out here, we decided to check out an estate sale in Avondale. I always thought estate sales were a million times more fun and exciting to go to. Thrift stores can be okay but there's nothing like going to an estate sale at a home that is currently being completely cleared out. Being in someone else's home and going through their things can sometimes be a lot to take it- but the finds are greater.

Hidden in the basement that smelled very similar to my grandma's basement, these dresses were tucked away in linen jackets. I still need to get them cleaned, but I'm excited to wear them and get them all ready for this fall and winter. The blue one needs some major TLC. The bottom has spots that don't look like they're going anywhere. I'm most likely just cut it shorter. It'll just be more of a micro-mini, like the retro orange dress.

This particular home might have been one of my favorites. There were pretty linens, cute knick knacks, secret doors with skeleton keys, and a crazy retro washing machine.

She even had a sewing machine that matched my tattoo almost identical!

The lady who was working there thought it was the most wild thing she had ever seen.

Among these, I found a steamer trunk for $1, a large tote bag that I'll use as a reusable shopping bag for 50 cents, a bunch of long ivory table lace for bag supplies (!!!), and a little camera. All this for $8! Jen and Alec grabbed some clothes, a radio, and suitcases for dirt cheap too.

Inside a Friend's Bedroom

I loved the drape hanging off the bed, all of her vintage hats, the lighting (it was also 2am during this tour), the shabby Marie Antionette meets relaxation and a retro class. She's so darn cute!

Iron to the Face Clark Gable.

A sudden change is happening and the photo above is my current emotion

and how I've been feeling for the past 48 hours.

I know ya'll think I'm probably insane for moving twice in the past 2 months, but I am moving again. I'm packing up the apartment and the pets, and heading back to the suburbs for some TLC. I'm keeping my salon day job in Chicago, and will most likely be spending a majority of my time out here, but I will be a short 40 minute drive away.

I'm not the best person to talk about self respect to, because I've definitely had my times, but sometimes, if you have to get out of a situation and you know you do, just fricken' do it. It's going to be painful, it's going to suck really bad, you're going to be fine one minute and horrible the next, and even if time doesn't heal it completely- you'll be a better place. Not every day can go as planned, and when it does a complete 180, you have to make the best out of it.

Hopefully this move is temporary. I plan to be back in my own (hopefully) apartment in Chicago after winter. I'm going to use this time to become a better self, save money, blow Bird Trouble up like crazy, reconnect with a few people, and have a blast doing it. I plan on going on vacations, I plan on doing a lot of thrifting, but first, I plan on getting out of unhealthy place in my life.

This being said, if there's short periods of time where I'm MIA from twitter, facebook, instagram, my blog, or my shop- don't think I've left. I'm just getting things situated!

Newest Work :: The 4-Way Bag

I did some squirrel stamping the other week with my own block stamps, and after testing them on muslin (see my DIY blog post here!), I decided to get a really nice tough canvas to work on an official project. After printing them, I didn't really know what type of bag shape to make with the canvas.

I was thinking about what I see most people carrying and what my friends wear and I thought: I'm more of a messenger bag, and if I'm not carrying my Fred Perry messenger bag that I've had for 7 years now, I'm carrying a small little cross-body bag. Most of my time, I am carrying that Fred Perry bag because I'm super casual and I feel more comfortable carrying that around the city on the buses, or on my bike, than carrying a small purse where I can't carry my books with me. So, I decided to cut the canvas into two large rectangles and I made a 4 way tote bag.

I still wanted it to be a cross body, and I wanted it to be comfortable. I really wanted to make it versatile so that you can wear it closer to your chest, or loose hanging on your hips. So I took a vintage trim and sewed it through the middle, so you can detach the repurposed belt strap and clasp it to the middle or to the top.

So here are the 4 different ways you can wear this bag. I wish I had better photos, but my camera's lens wont come out of the camera and I'm pretty sure hobbits came into my home at night, took apart my camera, and put it back together in the same spot it was, but messed with the mechanic-ism. Now it's broken. *shakes fists at the hobbits*

-Carry it at the handles as a simple tote bag.
-Clasp the strap to the leather braided handles to wear it low.
-Clasp the strap to the middle trim hoops and wear it high
-With the straps on the middle, fold the bag in half if you aren't carrying a load.

The first bag is mine. Muahaha. But I'm making another one, almost identical (different belt strap, piping, and lining- same canvas- same trims). If anyone would like to pre-order that one, please email me HERE.

My Weekend at Renegade Handmade

This past weekend was Renegade Handmade in Chicago. Luckily, I live only a few blocks away from Division St. where it was held, so after work on Saturday, I walked over to meet up with Jen and Alec. They'd been there for a few hours prior so we walked around for a little bit and met up with Becky from Strumpets Crumpets!! It was a glorious moment to finally meet a blog friend who I've know on the internet for years now. Jen and I also went up to the Red Velvet tent and introduced ourselves to the girls and chit-chatted about what we do and what we want to do. It was refreshing talking to such sweet ladies.

Here's a picture of Jen and I that I snatched from her blog. Yeah, I know, we cute.

Her and Alec ended up staying over two nights in a row. I loved having them here. It's great hanging out with two people who you get along with so well, right off the bat, even though you barely know them. I only wish they didn't live 3 hours away! But at least it's only 3 and not a million hours.

Unfortunately, this past weekend was probably the nicest weather we'll have. It sure is getting cold outside. I'm sitting outside the coffee shop near my apartment to post this since I don't have internet set up at our place. I'm trying to stay warn with my chai latte but it's not working!

DIY :: Block Stamping

Hello!

I went to Blick the other week and collected some fun stuff for block printing. I made my own squirrel stamp (two, to be exact) using the Blick E-Z-Cut Printing Blocks by cutting with Speedball Linoleum Cutters. The printing blocks are super easy to cut through, which is awesome for speedy carving, and could be dangerous because I almost sliced my fingers off a few times. It gets really fun though.

Then James, being the crafty little sucker that he is, cut some wood for me to mount it on. So sweet. I printed them with a fabric ink onto muslin to test it out and I ended up FORGETTING that I was just testing them out and ended up printing all my muslin. Oops! Looks like I was having too much squirrel-ish fun.

And that's what some of them look like. I also tried to make a Bird Trouble stamp, just for fun, but forgot that once it was printed, it was backwards. Trial and error, baby, trial and error.

As you can see, Cheeseburger was having a mighty fun time sitting on the couch, SCREAMING, at me for attention. Might as well just walk over all my fabric, kitten! Oh wait, she did. Kitten prints would be cute. Oh and also, this is my Caturday post too. Take that!

Okay, maybe it's not a freight train but we adventured on the abandoned tracks that go over Humboldt Park in Chicago. It was fun. Until we saw a cop car and decided to hide out in the bushes just in case we were trespassing. All in good fun- Go us!

A glimpse of what's next

I thought I'd give you guys a little surprise sneak preview of what I've been doing for the next small collection for Bird Trouble. This bag was created without a pattern. I just sort of free cut it after I hand painted it. I'm in love, in love, in love with how the shape came out.

Also, Jen from Turquoise Feathers is creating a whole new look for Bird Trouble. She's been showing me little nip-shots (tee-hee) of all the awesome work she's been doing for me. I can't even express how exciting it is and how grateful I am to have a professional and such a sweet lady do this for me!

I also get to see Jen, her fiance Alec, Kaelah from Little Chief Honeybee, and Becky from Strumpets Crumpets this weekend at Chicago's Renegade. WOO! Who else will be there?!

A peak into Bird's new home.

Many of you are probably so confused by my living situation right now. Let me give you the run through:

On August 1st, we moved into a two bedroom that was on the third floor of this vintage rehabbed building. It's in a wonderful location at the edge of Humboldt Park and Ukranian Village. Our landlord told us about a three bedroom in the same building, a floor down, with a great deal on rent, so we HAD to grab it. So we lived at the 2 bedroom for two weeks, then moved down to the 3 bedroom. I love it.

Some favorites:

7 minute bike ride from one of my salon locations.
20 minute bike ride to the two other locations.
Within 15 minutes walking/7 minute biking to awesome night life and hipster shopping (if I feel the need to go to Akira, Urban Outfitters, or American Apparel).
There's a million coffee shops by me!
Humboldt Park- a HUGE park where I can run laps with Ty and enjoy the sun with a book.
There's a Dominicks down the street (huge plus!)

We have a lot of renovation to do. We plan on staying here for a long time because the area is so great and it's just getting better the more west you go. There's some ugly tiling in the bathroom (pink, yuck) and ugly paint on the walls that we need to make pretty. Until we have the time and expenses to do that, we are dealing with what we were given!

Studio Sunday

I hope my U.S. readers is having a wonderful holiday weekend! I don't really care much for celebrating Labor Day. We don't have any particular plans, besides for enjoying our days off on a, hopefully, beautiful weekend.

I enjoyed my Saturday night with my best friend, Christina, and some other lovely friends. We've had to reschedule so many times but Saturday night is the night she can stay out since she doesn't work today. Who knows what we're doing today- we don't have any set plans- but I'm so excited that I can finally hang out with her! She's been a super busy bee with switching jobs, starting classes again, and now she has to plan a move for the middle of the month.

Caturday

Meow, little primitive kitten. This little folk art cat is made to order by Old War Primitives. I'm in love with the simplicity of his sandy coat and the nostalgic memories it gave me.

It was fall, and we were driving down roads that could possibly lead to no where. We saw a structure that looked like a home, a crumbling barn in the distance. We'd park the car far and ran down the side of the dusty road, jumped the rusted iron fence, and headed towards the barn with our bodies close together. The barn had wallpaper that was melting off, wood floors, wood walls that were warping. There was an attic with a little window, where I swear that little primitive cat should have been in the corner of the room.
I found a purse and a monthly-dated (not year dated) journal in a closet in that home. In the front cover of the journal, there was one sentence written in that book. It was from a woman that was seemed to be craving for simplicity. Whether or not she found peace, I know that her home and her journal gave me a wonderful memory of my whimsical, care-free, teenage angst years and a book to write in when I crave simplicity. I still write in that book to this day.

Artist Feature :: Leslie Oschmann

Leslie Oschmann for Swarm is an artist, a re inventor, a bag design, a furniture designer, and a manipulator. I found Leslie through Anthropologie and a curious me, after seeing one of her bags, I decided to google her and lurk around her website. It, of course, looks all cute and shabby. After reading up on her on decor8, I learn that she's a former visual director for Anthropologie.

She does it all! I really envy artists who try a bunch of different mediums. I'm actually trying to venture out to printing and painting on canvas at the moment, and learning something new is always a fun challenge. Honestly, if I can learn everything, I will. I'm not into books or history or biology, but anything crafty.. I'll want to master it. At least once.

Designer Feature ::: Hound

HOUND's designer and founder, Jennifer Beeman, is based out of Chicago and having a local connection to her might be why I love this line so much, but I love it for so many other reasons too. Her spring/summer 2011 line was inspired by the shadow lines from light going through woods. It's so clean and so peaceful.

Her items are so great though because they capture a light, airy, classic straight line fit. I love the bold pastel colors and the simplicity of everything. Though she seems the lines straight and gives each piece a vintage whimsical vibe. It makes me want to go camping, or hiking at Starved Rock. It's only an hour and a half away. Once my car is out of the shop, I'm going to try to plan a camping weekend so I can hopefully be as inspired by something similar like Jennifer was.

Handmade Dainty Dress - Cotton Pull Over

Tuesday afternoon, I took the same pattern from the square shirt to create a dress. Basically, from the end of the bottom of the armhole, I made a straight line with a ruler to an appropriate length of a dress. I like mine above the knee. I used one of my dresses in my closet as a reference. It's awesome how your clothes as home can be used as guidelines to create new clothes!

I finished it within a few hours so I could wear it to work. I'm pretty speedy when it comes to sewing since I've done it for so long. I always do this though, I cram a project in so tight but it always seems to work out in the end. Plus, when I'm working on one item, I like to enhance little details. This is the dainty little cotton dress that I finished last night! I love it! It's so comfortable and light. Perfect for summer and for layering up in the colder weather. Best thing: It's one of a kind! Made from a recycled breathable cotton. It's an easy pull-over-your-head dress with no closures. Fits from a small up to a large easily.

How can it fit from a variety of sizes?:

It's cut straight from the armholes making it roomy and a 'square' cut. The purpose of the belt loops helps you dress up and play around with different colored/textures belts to enhance your waist. **In the picture: I'm using a thrifted brown belt that fits my waist, but not my hips.**

There are leather straps accented on the sleeves to create a relaxed slouch look but hold some structure. There's a bunch of simple white stitching detail on the seams. I'd like to add more on the side seams tonight. I doubled stitched at the hem. I also added a leather hanging label with "BT" burnt into it.

Handmade Pinstriped Slouch Shirt

My lovely panda coworker, Lauren, wore this great shirt this other night that fit her like a glove. I loved the comfortable, minimalist look of it. I told her "That looks so easy to make!" and she looks at me, says "It's like a square!" It was like my brain stopped and I had to go home instantly to figure out a pattern so I can make my own.

The other night, doing laundry, I came across this simple square cut shirt I bought from Target a few weeks ago that I love. The fit of it is perfect for me. It's loose, comfortable, off the body, with larger arm holes (perfect for when I ride my bike or a long day outside!). The shape of it reminded me of Lauren's shirt. I took my Target shirt, laid it on top of some fabric, and simply cut around.

This is what I came up with! The fabric I used was thrifted. It feels sort of like a.... bed sheet. Really light, thin, but comfortable. It hangs perfectly! I added some simple scraps of leather for details and to make it more unique. Either way, it's one of a kind!

I apologize for the horrible pictures as of late. I've been using my iPhone WAY too much lately! I do have some real photos to share soon. Until then, iPhones have gotten the best of me, again.

Life Without Internet

I feel like I've been on a month break from blogging since we don't have internet yet. Yikes! James and I have a nice little coffee shop, The Knock Box, only a minute walk from us. They have the best blended Chai and a bunch of enjoyable snacks.

We went to Knock Box this past weekend so James could do some research for a friend, and we both enjoyed relaxing on their couch with the view of California Avenue. I read my book while he used my laptop, then I quickly uploaded pictures so I could edit them at home. It's funny, as much as I know I need internet, a part of me LOVES not having it. I feel more productive and I get more "me" time. I recently deleted my personal facebook, but kept Bird Trouble's facebook, so I could use that time doing something more lively. The truth of the matter is: It's pretty great, life without Facebook.

I'll be getting a provider this month and it'll make my life loads easier. A lot of my inspiration comes from other artists, and not having a lot of artist friends in Chicago (I wish I had more!), I need another resource. Seeing all of my blog friends and other aspiring artists from all over the internet makes my bones all happy and gets me in a creative mood. Thank you for being inspiring!

Other than that, I've been doing some random creating as of late. I had a random spur of wanting to make stencils and print my own fabric by hand... so I did. Just random shapes and animals right now... yes, animals. I'll show you those later in the week!

Dumpster diving, anyone?

I see myself as a friendly, talented, approachable, but sometimes shy.
I also see myself as a very strong... dumpster diver.
Last week, on my walk home from the coffee shop down the street, I saw a pile of trash that looked like any ordinary trash. Casually (it's funny walking 'casually' towards someones trash), I strolled over and noticed there were boxes open with toys and more spilling out!

Here's what I found that fine morning:

Taco Love.

If you've known me, in real life, for a while,
then you know that I have a feel things I cherish deeply:

Greasy steak tacos with cheese.
Squirrels that come up to you when you make click noises with your mouth.
Driving to Wisconsin for a random antiquing trip.

The only person I keep in touch with from my high school, Max, is apprenticing at The Alley in Chicago for tattoos. He texted me the day before my birthday, on the 14th, and said "Want a tattoo tomorrow? Something small and simple?" and I respond with "Like a taco?".

Alas, meet the taco on my ankle.

This tattoo is close to me, not only because it's a taco, but because Max once tattooed me in our friend's bedroom. We had a few drinks down and it was one of his first. Needless to say, I asked for snake bites on my wrist (literally two dots- they look like freckles) for mine and Eric's make-believe 80's hair metal band: Cobra Snake. The second tattoo Max did was a heart behind my ear... which was, honestly, wasn't as bad as I thought it was. Though, when it healed, the heart started looking more and more like a 5 year old sketch on a wall.
I had it taken care of. Kind of.
It's just so funny that we go from being 15 year old kids with green and pink hair, wearing studded jackets, thinking we're cooler than everything... to drinking in the forest preserve by our high school, drinking our parents beers in a friends bedroom... to being able to afford to tip your good friend for a kind service and an awesome birthday present. #Grownuptalk

Thanks Max! You guys might meet him soon. I want to do a collaboration of his awesome prints, make it into a pattern, print it on some fabric, and sew some cute little ALEXZ/MAX creations. We'll see.

I store my ready-to-ship items in a vintage magician's travel box. It's basically two suitcases stacked on top of one another with wheels at the bottom. I was luckily enough to find an industrial vintage stapler with vintage staples at the thrift store the other week. I'm a sucker for office supplies.

The other day I was cleaning the apartment from top to bottom because James' family was coming to visit. I blasted Trampled By Turtles the whole time. This band is amazing and the singing brings chills down my spine. Here's a small part by my favorite song. Watch and listen to it from youtube here.

Newest work :: Day backpack from a vintage apron.

This past winter, I attended the Vintage Bazaar in Pilsen (a neighborhood here in Chicago) in hopes of grabbing some great deals and unique items.

Unfortunately, we didn't know how early they were closing down so we ran around like chickens with our heads cut off for the last 30 minutes. I wish I would have snatched some pictures of the space they had in Pilsen, it was this huge factory with those awesome windows (the ones in expensive lofts that you wish you owned). It was wide open with tons of vintage sellers.

I did end up leaving with a few items... those being of a cow horn, a denim mom dress (super cute after i shortened it!), a denim dad shirt (so James and I could be the denim couple), a vintage car mirror, and a pair of 1960's vintage sunglasses that had an 'Advertised in Play Boy' tag. Those, unfortunately, broke for the 4th and final time this past weekend. I've got the bad sunglasses luck.

My favorite item I left with, of course was material that I was going to be able to work with. This AWESOMMMME work apron with paint splatters, an address from the south side of Chicago (Cermak Rd.), and some great pockets. I immediately wanted to make it into a backpack. I knew I wanted to.
The straps on it were perfect for tie-strings and a vision of a perfect day backpack. I love buying vintage textiles that I can make into something different. Much more than productive that collecting squirrels and squirrels, and squirrels. (NO, IT'S NOT!)

I had this leather jacket that James let me rip up. I completely de-stitched each seam until it was just a jacket unraveled. I used those scraps for the straps and was even able to double fold it for comfort.

I just really like backpacks and I may be a sucker for them. I think I'll definitely try to make more backpack styles in the future. This one definitely inspired me to make more.

Happy Caturday

Happy Caturday my lovely, cat lovin', readers!
I'm going to try to make every Saturday, Caturday on my blog.
My co-workers and I always email blast each other with kitten photos, videos, kitten love, cats on cats, cats with bunnies, ect. They always make my start to the weekend a peppy one.

Caturday is solely because I am slightly and more and more becoming crazy about cats. It's just the weird things that Cheeseburger does that makes me goo-goo over her. Today, she wouldn't let me take her cat board scratcher because she thought I was going to destroy it. She calmed down after I told her that I was putting more drugs in it for her. She quietly nodded her kitten head and I continued to take her scratch board into the kitchen.

She was pretty happy when I came back into the living room.

Today's Caturday feature is: this Kitty Cat Tee by Leah Goren.

Meet: a vintage hat.

I've had this vintage hat for a few years now. It's delicate and the beads are falling off. The tulle is ripped in places but I still wear it now and then. I think it's a great thing to have on the wall. The texture and colors of it are inspiring.
